Nestled in a truly unique setting on the banks of the River Avon, our project 'The Cow Barn' combines an inspirational workspace and entertaining space, with stunning interiors making it the perfect addition to our client’s home. The barn connects the river with our client's existing house and opens up the whole plot to the picturesque setting.
The barn was originally a derelict, agricultural building that blighted the view and light of the family home and it was in such a dilapidated state it posed a safety threat. Today, it has been re-envisaged as a uniquely stunning work and entertaining space for the home, which also houses a guest suite and multi-functional gym.
But that is just part of the story.
The building was never designed for human habitation yet it sits within the curtilage of a listed building, so we were restricted with the architectural design. Structural limitations also restricted us, resulting in the creation of a fabric within a fabric that had to key to existing openings and ridge heights. It was essential to us to retain the overall sense of space, so we chose to limit the division of rooms and focus on multi-functional spaces that effortlessly transform between family and business use.
Another way we were able to cultivate that feeling of space, was by utilising the stunning views through bespoke, full gable-end glazing and a unique open-plan layout which encourages views through the entire building to the riverscape beyond.
An open plan design presents its own challenges, particularly when it comes to both acoustics and privacy. To overcome these issues, the mezzanine finishes were chosen to dampen acoustic levels, ensuring that residual noise levels would not interfere with the functionality of the workspace, which includes podcast recording.
We were also keen to extend the usable spaces into the landscape, for example, the tailor-made entertaining kitchen includes a through bar directly connecting to the outdoor kitchen and spa.
To ensure both the flow and functionality of the property we were keen to avoid using any physical barriers, where possible, instead choosing to zone each space, allowing it to offer even more versatility. One day the space could be used as a workspace for a single individual and the next be used as effectively as a venue for a children’s pool party.
Although demolishing the original building might have seemed easier to provide the clients with full access to the riverscape, there is something so satisfying and special about giving a new lease of life to the barn and being able to combine the agricultural charm with a show-stopping new family and entertaining space.
